Round maille is probably my favorite chain maille weave because it is hollow and you can capture leather, ribbons, beads or other treasures within it. It has a lovely honeycomb texture that is really highlighted by the contrast of black leather and stainless steel.

Instructions
Step 1
Sizing this bracelet. Because of the thickness of this bracelet it needs to be made about 1-1.2" (25-30mm) longer than your wrist measurement. This measurement is 3 x the depth of the bracelet (3 x 7mm) plus a small amount of ease so you can move your wrist and do up the clasp.

Make a 2-1-2-1-2 chain. To do this place 4 closed rings on an open ring and close the ring. With an open ring go through 2 rings from the last step add 2 closed rings and close the ring.

Step 2
Place the leather across the middle of the chain. Enclose the leather by taking an open ring and going through the first 2 and last 2 rings of the chain and close the ring.

Step 3
Take the top ring from each of the 2-ringed links and fold it back towards the leather so it sits flat. The chain maille piece is now 3 rows of round maille.

Step 4
To add a new row of round maille the rings are added at the point where 2 rings from the previous row almost meet. Each row consists of 3 rings. Take an open ring and working into the rings from the last row at the edge of the leather, go into one of the rings and out of the next ring and close the ring. To finish this row 2 more rings need to be added.

Step 5
Continue to add rows of 3 rings until you have 43 rows of round maille in total. Trim your leather to the same length as the chain maille making sure the chain maille is taut and not caught up. A note on sizing, if your bracelet is a different size to the one here, the leather and this tube of chain maille need to be the length of your bracelet, as worked out at the beginning, minus the length of the clasp and minus 0.4" (10mm) which is the length of the 2 tapered ends that are added in the next step.

Step 6
Add a row of 3 rings in exactly the same way as before using the smaller 5/32" rings. Do this for both ends. This tapers the chain maille.

Step 7
Add one 5/32" ring in one spot on the next row. Now add a second ring as you would normally but using a larger 3/16" ring. Before you close this ring take it through the 1st ring you just added. This closes the end of the round maille and stops the leather from coming out. Do the same on the other end adding the clasp to the larger ring before closing.
