My Favorite Tool
by Sarah Thompson
We always love to hear from instructors what tools they use as they create. Today, Sarah Thompson lets us into her world and tells us a little bit about one of her favorite tools. The Tulip Beading Awl.
Instructions
My absolutely favorite tool is my Tulip beading awl. This tool is used to pierce the weave so that I can then sew embellishments or additional wire to the woven strip.

Since we are piercing the weave we want a beading awl that comes to a fine point. Most beading awls are to blunt at the tip, and pictures can be deceiving. I bought several before I found the Tulip. I actually have one in reserve in case the awl breaks as this is a tool I cannot live without.

When using the awl be careful how far you push it through the weave. We want a hole just big enough to allow your weaving wire to pass 2-3 times. Too large of a hole and you end up breaking the weave.

I find the best method is to twist the beading awl back and forth as you push it between the base wires. This motion helps push the wires out of the way.
